The Amatsu Treatment

" I would rather know the person who has the disease than know the disease the person has." - Hippocrates

An Amatsu treatment, usually called a ‘balance’, normally takes 30 minutes although the first session is around one hour. This initial assessment allows a complete picture to be built up of your individual needs at that time.

For the most part treatments are carried out fully clothed.

Using a combination of observation, checking and palpation I will gather further information about the current status of your body. After appraising your needs I will use a combination of soft tissue techniques including:

Anma massage
Natural movement orientated mobilisation
Muscular re-patterning
Proprioceptive balancing
Visceral and cranial balancing
(Shinden and Kenku Jutsu levels)

No two treatments will ever be the same. Each balance will address your life between sessions, the things that happen to you, and will reflect this. This process continues until a stable level of general well being is attained, after which the majority of my clients find a period of time between treatments that suits them to maintain it.

The number of treatments you require will always depend on your individual problems. Part of my philosophy is to help you regain some control over your own health, teaching you to listen to your body and understand the signs it sends. A balance on a regular basis may help you to prevent the everyday stresses of life from building up. Prevention is always better than cure but Amatsu is always a complementary therapy not an alternative.

All under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

After the treatment

“Think with the whole body” – Taisen Deshimaru

Many people feel very different as soon as they get off the treatment couch; others start to feel the changes over a couple of days. It is not unusual to experience:-

  • a sense of freedom, a lightness or to feel more upright.
  • tired or sometimes emotional after a treatment, particularly the first one, this is quite natural.
  • your body standing and moving differently.
  • some aching in muscles as they let go of old injury patterns

Drinking sufficient water and keeping mobile will help you process these symptoms. Please think of this as your body sorting out a new way of being, a new way of coping with whatever you next throw at it!.

For the 24-48 hours following your balance my general advice is to:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Keep mobile eg have a brisk, short walk swinging your arms
  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Don’t overdo uncomfortable postures which may have contributed to your problems eg sitting hunched over a computer keyboard or holding a telephone to your ear
  • Go barefoot at home and wherever possible and avoid high heels
  • Have a warm bath or shower
  • Be kind to your body. Although gentle, Amatsu is asking your body to release lots of restrictions that it may have held for a very long time, so you may feel quite tired
  • Most importantly, listen to your body – it will tell you what it needs

If your treatment has been in response to gastric, abdominal or immune system based symptoms you may wish to try to avoid those foods that could commonly cause dehydration or that are commonly known to provoke stress reactions in the body (such as refined sugars, processed foods and caffeine based products.) This is in line with a normal healthy diet.
